Arnie

Walking Stick  No. 0003

Arnie  after  Arnold Schwarzenegger as the cyborg in The Terminator because this stick is also some what of a cyborg.  A very tough nut with scars and metal bits to boot.

This sticks is the terminator. With the battle scars to prove it.

It's made from Ironwood.  Not just Ironwood but old aged ironwood.

Iron wood is Erythrophleum chlorostachys Its resistant to termites. The termites which munch everything else in the Norther Territory woodlands, but they do not eat the heart wood of the Ironwood tree.

When dead Ironwood branches are left to rot on the ground the outside sap wood rots away and the heart wood hardens incredibly hard. It will have cracks from age but the grain of the ironwood does not run straight so the timber although scared from age and drying out maintains its strength and hardness. It also cleans up to a very rich timber.

I rescued this bad boy. cleaned it up and filled its cracks with epoxy resin. Put a few bolts through the bottom of the stick to prevent any movement of the cracks. And then added  the metal hook, which was luck or guided by the sticks spirit, but it was an unintentional stoke of genius.  Why because the angle of the hook and its relation to the curvature of the stick and balance of weight results in it being able to hang or perch anywhere quite stable.

Arnie is a tough stick. It's also a great walking stick the hand grip is wonderful . Hard to show in pictures but it's very comfortable as you dont have to wrap your fingers around it tight . Has lots of comfortable grip to lean on.  And the handle of the stick is solid. If you got attacked by a dog when walking.  You could .... Well let's just say poor dog. You could play hockey or cricket with it too ((( smile)))  The other cyborg metal fitting the eyelet is handy for hanging key  or bag or any thing that has a clip. Handy... Not the prettiest with its battle scars but it will be around long after your gone.
